September 3 & 4 – The aroma of garlic-y goodness will fill the Shawnee Valley over Labor Day weekend when the 17th Annual Pocono Garlic Festival returns to host site Shawnee Mountain Ski Area in Shawnee-on-Delaware! Indulge all of your garlic fantasies at this legendary event, featuring flavorful foods liberally laced with Pocono-grown garlic plus a fantastic variety of entertainment. Presented by the Pocono Garlic Growers Association, this premier food festival and Pocono Mountain tradition offers a sampling of local farms, food vendors, wineries, eateries, crafters and entertainers. The Pocono Garlic Festival attracts as many as 25,000 people annually, and organizers say that this year’s event may be the largest in its history. Over 50 vendors will provide a wide range of foods, from simple to sophisticated and geared towards the “foodie” with discerning taste buds, while local artists and crafters exhibit a variety of hand crafted garlic-themed creations, from homemade wood items to garlic-themed pottery and paintings. Non-stop live music showcased on three stages, plus educational demonstrations, novelty shows and plenty of children’s activities make this a great family event! September 3 thru 5 – The 36th annual La Festa Italiana returns to Courthouse Square in Downtown Scranton for Labor Day Weekend! This three-day festival is an end-of-summer tradition that annually attracts thousands of visitors. Celebrate Italian-style with food, music and culture! More than sixty vendors will offer a wide variety of authentic Italian food and many displays, while continuous live entertainment will be featured. Hours for La Festa Italiana are 11:00am to 10:00pm on Saturday & Sunday and 11:00am to 9:00pm on Monday and admission is FREE. The annual Mass in Italian will be celebrated at 10:00am on Sunday, Sept. 4 in St. Peter’s Cathedral, located one block from the festival site. And don’t miss the big Fireworks Display that will be launched at 10:00pm on Sunday night! September 17 – Today is Apple Butter-Making Day at scenic Bushkill Falls in Bushkill! Watch and help in the making of delicious homemade apple butter in a 50-gallon copper pot that needs to be continuously stirred; visitors are welcome to try their hand at stirring the pot! The batch will be ready for pouring and sale sometime in mid-afternoon. Be sure to buy some to take home! There will also be Bluegrass music by The Lost Ramblers from noon until 4:00pm, and Wildlife Demonstrations with live birds and animals at 1:00pm and 2:00pm. Rain date for Apple Butter-Making Day is Sunday, September 18. Bushkill Falls is centered on eight roaring waterfalls and features miles of nature trails and picnic areas, plus paddle boats, miniature golf, fishing, exhibits, specialty shops and more. The famous Pocono Mountain attraction is located off of Route 209 in Bushkill and it opens to the public every day at 9:00am through November 27. September 24 & 25 – The 15th annual Shawnee Mountain PRCA Rodeo and Chili Cook-Off returns to Shawnee Mountain Ski Area in Shawnee-on-Delaware! It’s a rip-roarin’ real live rodeo in the Poconos! Experience the thrill of professional cowboys competing in fully sanctioned PRCA events including Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Calf Roping, Team Roping and Bull Dogging! Professional cowgirls will also be competing in Barrel Racing. Live country music, line dancing and craft and food vendors add to the weekend festivities. The gates open at 11:30am on Saturday & Sunday and the Rodeo action starts at 2:00pm. Slopeside seating will be available to all spectators, so bring your blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the events!
