Community Spotlight

Though the Weather is Cold there is a Wonderful Place to Go

Submitted By: Katie Daggett

Pinecrest Lake Golf and Country Club has plenty to offer in the Spring, Summer and Fall, golf, swimming, boating, fishing, tennis, outdoor heated Swimming pool with Slide. All this AND a secluded woodland setting.

But what do you do when the temperature outside leaves no room to doubt that it’s winter? Well you can hop in the car and head to Camelback, Jack Frost or Big Boulder Ski Area’s – all just 15 to 25  minutes away. You can shop at the Crossings outlets or lunch in charming Downtown Stroudsburg or Jim Thorpe, once again just a short car ride away.

But what if you don’t want to get back into your car after your trip in from NJ, NY or Philly and points south? What can you do just outside your door? Better yet what can the kids do that will keep them occupied for more then 15 minutes AND will give them childhood memories to last a life time?

Well, I’ll tell you. There are some of the most beautiful and untouched cross country ski trails just outside your door at Pinecrest. Hidden and private, these trails offer sanctuary to all kind of local fauna. Pennsylvania White Tail Deer, Beaver, fox, winter birds as well as all other kind of small woodland creatures. If you don’t think that cross country skiing is your cup of tea grab a pair of skates or a warm blanket and a pic-nic lunch for you and the kids and head out to Beaver Brook Skating Pond.

If you have ever seen the movie “The Bishop’s Wife” (1947), and you should it’s a Christmas classic, then you will be able to imagine this most perfect of Capraesque places.

Two ponds connected by a spill way with a wooden board walk over it make up Beaver Brook’s skating area. The pond to the right is just the right shape and size for a game of pond hockey. Now the pond to the left is round and charming, with wooden steps to help you get from the woods to the ice. Both ponds are surrounded by pine tress big and small, but this pond, this pond to the left, well, it has the most perfect little island in the middle with three tall, thick pines to give it a bit of purpose and a pic-nic table to hold you when you want to take a break. And when it starts to get a little chilly all you have to do is lite a fire in the fire pit with the perfectly split and stacked dry wood straight from it’s shelter.

This is a special place that once only seemed to exist in books and films. So bring your skates, your family, your friends and don’t forget the smores and the hot coco too. You can have that perfect winter memory to share or to save for your very own. It’s all up to you.

Sales & Vacation rentals are available in Pinecrest Lake Golf & Country Club – visit www.c21poconopines.com or click on the link to the left for our Pocono Pines office.

Sharon Ruggiero celebrated 25 years

Submitted By: Maggie Flartey-Kaminski,CRB

BLAKESLEE, PA : Sharon Ruggiero celebrated 25 years
with CENTURY 21. She was honored with a surprise party at the Blakeslee
office. Sharon started out as “OUR GAL FRIDAY” and did it all from front
desk, assigning leads, typing (ha ha) contracts and leases, bookkeeping and
receptionist. She recalls lugging in firewood to keep our woodstove going.
And she laughed about the “typing test” she had to take to get the job.
Sharon has been a loyal and hardworking employee over the years and there is
no way to truly thank her for all she does. Now she manages the accounting
for Blakeslee, Lake Harmony, Hazleton and Brodheadsville. Plus she is a
Super Relocation Director for our Relo Department for Select Group.

Sharon came on board when she was 18. We shared in celebrating her marriage
and birth of her two children Dylan and Cheyanne who are now 16 and 11. Boy
does time fly.

Congratulations to a great woman and a wonderful employee.

Brian McCardle, manager of the Hazleton branch stopped in to celebrate with
Sharon as they both started with the company around the same time. So we
gave him a little celebration too and crowned him.

A Very Special Hoilday Visit

Century 21 Select Group – Pocono Pines

We had a very Special visit from a very jolly ol’ friend and rental program home owner today!

During their travels through out our area today Mrs. Cindy Dautrich and Santa (Mr. Dautrich as a spot on St. Nick)) stopped by to wish us a very Merry Christmas and to drop off a little holiday cheer in the form of some excellent chocolate.

Mr. John “Jumper” & Mrs. Cindy Dautrich have a lovely and popular home here in Pocono Pines in the Lake Naomi Community that our office manages as a vacation rental property.

As is the case with long time “Rental Owners” on our program we as agents and office staff become friends with ”Our Owners”. Many Home Owners stop by during the Holidays to wish us well, but never have we had one who has went to such lengths and enjoyed it so much!

Cindy explained to us that they were on their way to Pocono Medical Center so Santa could offer warm tidings and they thought we could use some red suited jollies as well.

Jumper loves to dress up as Santa during the Season and visit nursing homes and other community service providers in their “full time” town of Philadelphia but this year he especially wanted to visit  Thomas Jefferon Hospital in Philadelphia and Pocono Medical Center in Stroudsburg to give back to the two places responsible for him still being with us this Christmas.

After going out for a jog last January Jumper suffered a cardiac arrest on the road in Lake Naomi. Thanks to many passers by who stopped, Lake Naomi’s head of security and the staff of Pocono Medical and “Jeff” Jumper is able to continue his favorite holiday activity!

We want to thank Cindy and Jumper for thinking of us and Thanks to everyone who helped when they were needed so that we got some warm and welcome hugs from Santa today!

“Towamensing” is a Le nape Indian word which means Nature’s Wonders. Towamensing Trials sports a 190 acre lake, a community center with game room, and a private restaurant and bar. Special events are scheduled all year long. Towamensing Trails is a private residential community with permanent and part-time residents. It was established in 1971 and developed in 6 stages known as sections.
The community has 24 hour security, 5 day disposal of trash, and full time maintenance and administrative staff.

Amenities include a private pool and beach, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, ball field and playground. During the summer season boats can be rented. The lake is stocked with fish periodically. (PA license is required). Currently there is a catch and release rule in effect. Private boats are allowed on the lake, as long as they are not gas powered and are registered at the Teepee Office.

Adjacent to the lake and pool is the Community Center. Here various recreational activities take place, such as Halloween parties for the children, Easter egg hunts, Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebrations, teen activities, flea markets, and many other events.

Recently added was an outdoor pavilion which has greatly enhanced the community.

The lounge serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments and is open to all owners, renters, and authorized guests. At various times meals and snacks are available, along with music and dancing. During good weather many functions are held outside on the deck.

Towamensing is a great Family Community located close to 2 Ski Resorts, 2 Professional Golf Courses, Indoor Water Park, White Water Rafting, Fishing, Hunting and many more Pocono Activities.

Lake Harmony Communities We Serve – Split Rock Resort

Tourism rises from coal’s ashes
Split Rock Resort, once a Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company offshoot, is flourishing in the shadow of its late, great parent
Among the largest hotel and businesses in the Pocono Mountains, Kidder Township’s Split Rock Resort has steadily grown since 1981 under the ownership of Jack Kalins. It may come as a surprise that this resort began as a hunting retreat for executives of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company (LC&N.)
In the mid 1800s, to protect the watershed feeding their navigation system, LC&N purchased thousands of acres of wilderness at the headwaters of the Lehigh River. In Kidder Township, along the west shore of 127-acre Big Pond, property was purchased from the Keck estate. Later, Big Pond would change its name to Lake Harmony. The property included Big Spring, the source of drinking water for all the homes surrounding the lake.
A feature of the property was Split Rock, a mountaintop rock canyon outcropping part of the geologic formation that created Boulder Field at Hickory Run State Park. Located [1/2]-mile west of Lake Harmony at an elevation of 2,040 feet, it has been classified as red sandstone of the Duncannon Member of the Catskill Formation. The Wisconsin Glacier tilted the rock formation with subsequent erosion wearing away the exposed rock layers and creating the canyon.
The property was, in 1937, planned by Robert V. White, president of LC&N, to become a hunting and fishing retreat for company executives. The original rustic lodge had five rooms with baths and ten without for a total capacity of thirty. It opened in 1942 and was immediately popular.
The WWII years helped a declining LC&N gain temporary profitability. But by 1949, the company returned to its descent toward insolvency. Although its coal business was floundering, its resort business was growing. In 1946, White added a ski slope; a forerunner to what would become Big Bolder the first ski slope in Pennsylvania. White stepped down as LC&N president in 1954.
In 1962, LC&N reorganized. It was getting out of the coal and railroad businesses and focusing on resorts and real estate. Its Pocono properties were the one bright spot in its portfolio. It continued to expand Split Rock Lodge.
In the mid 1960s, the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the lessee of LC&N’s Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad, collapsed. In 1965, LC&N issued a liquidation plan. Among the assets, each shareholder received one share of Split Rock Lodge, Inc.
In August of 1970, a fire burned the main lodge at Split Rock. “It was a traumatizing experience for the community,” said Split Rock General Manager Chuck Dickenson. “It was an important focal hub.” Days later, plans began on construction of a newer lodge (completed in 1991) with additional rooms, and new dining and recreational areas.
In 1981, Jack Kalins, a former Pocono Raceway employee, fulfilled a lifelong dream to operate a recreational resort by purchasing Split Rock. He formed a corporation in 1978 and in 1979, changed it name to Vacation Charters, Ltd. (VCL.) with a focus on vacation properties. VCL purchased the Carriage House at Pocono Manor.
In 1981, VCL purchased Village Square and Pocono Recreation, Inc., which included Split Rock Lodge and the Lake Harmony property. In 1986, VCL purchased the Holiday Inn at White Haven currently the Pocono-Ramada Inn and in 1999, purchased Mountain Laurel Resort.
In 1985, the Galleria complex was completed at Split Rock. It had an indoor pool, movie theater, racquetball courts, tennis courts, game room, coffee shop and ice cream parlor. It later expanded by adding a salon, gift shop, and a new building with tennis courts-the old tennis courts became a ballroom. The building was expanded to house an indoor regulation NBA basketball court, a fitness center, massage operation, and an eight-lane bowling alley.
Building continued adding a 27-hole golf course, 98 rustic villas and a new section, Willowbrook, designed as a time-share condominium built around the golf course. Willowbrook’s unit three is currently under construction. Split Rock plans to add a 40,000 square foot indoor water park with a wave pool, surf ride, and tube rides.
VCL has historically generated sales in the $30to $35 million range while heavily depending on outside financing to support operations and growth. In 1993, one of its lenders withdrew its credit line in compliance with new banking regulations forcing VCL into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It emerged from bankruptcy in 1996.
Split Rock Resorts is currently about 1,000-acres and has a payroll of 600 higher in season. It employs an outside crew of 45 to keep the lawns mowed, the flowers cared for, and work on the ongoing construction.
Split Rock draws guests from the Philadelphia, New York and Delmarva markets. During the summer and winter seasons, it attracts families with children. In the spring and fall, it caters to couples. Its montage of geology, natural beauty and historic location caters to eco-tourism and heritage tourism. Guests enjoy viewing deer, which there are more of in Split Rock than in Hickory Run State Park.
Now that gambling is coming to Pennsylvania, Split Rock Resort is well positioned for gambling related growth. Being well-established and well-positioned in the New York and Philadelphia markets, for Split Rock Lodge success is looking like a sure bet.
