CENTURY 21 Select Group – Lake Harmony
Split Rock at Lake Harmony, Carbon County
500 million years ago there was an ocean here! 400 million years ago, this part of the Earth was a mass of convulsions, earthquakes and tremors. 300 million years ago, three glaciers slowly and formidably crept over the same land that is now Lake Harmony and, of course, The Split Rock Resort. It is believed that the actual split rock, a large outcrop of red sandstone, was the result of the last ice sheet, known as the Wisconsin Glaciation which occurred about 70,000 years ago.
A little more than 180 years ago, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company bought 45,000 acres in the Pocono Mountains to protect its headwater rights to the Lehigh River. The development and transfiguration of the land began in 1938 when Robert V. White took over the presidency of the company. Mr. White realized the potential of the beautiful mountain terrain, naturally stocked with fish and game. Within 10 years of its opening in 1941, The Lodge was one of the East Coast’s finest year-round sports resorts.
The Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania are an integral part in the history of our state. There are many landmarks that play a role in making our area unique.
Through the “This is MY HISTORY” photo campaign, citizens can submit photographs of places that are significant to them and their community. Photo submissions can include archaeological excavations, historic or rural landscapes, downtown streetscapes, residential neighborhoods, and adaptive re-use of historic buildings and structures. But success stories are not the whole picture – contributors may also send pictures of historic resources that have been lost to neglect or are slated for demolition.
To find out more visit the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission website where you can download and print a “This is My History” sign.
To submit photos:
1. If you wish, you may use a “This is MY HISTORY” sign, and include a person holding it in your photo.
2. E-mail the photo to papreservethis@yahoo.com. Please be sure to name the place or building
3. If you wish, include any other comments or captions that you wish to share.
You’ll be able to check back and view photos at
