Hello everyone,

I am involved in three businesses all of which I enjoy and look forward to on any given day. This fact is a true blessing especially since most people don’t even have one job that they enjoy.

Whether I am at the office at Century 21—Select Group in Tyler Hill, singing at one of my gigs in the area or selling furniture at Rasmussen’s, I find that one thing is almost always true. It is the people around you that matter and contribute to making you successful and happy in your work.

Networking is not new to anyone. Every person we interact with is a potential client or could connect us to a client. I believe that in order to gain loyal customers we must concentrate on the person before the sale. By that I mean listening to what they have to say, really hearing their needs and concerns and showing respect. If we take a genuine interest in someone and actually have something of value to offer them, then the rest will come naturally.

On that same note, keep in mind that you also matter as a person in your business dealings. We all have a choice in how we act towards others. If someone treats you in a negative manner you might respectfully decide not to work with them. Sometimes the potential dollar amount to be made is not worth the personal expense.

 Make it a great day!

Real estate scams hitting more REALTORS®

Submitted by: Kim Shindle

Add real estate as a medium for the growing trend of Internet scams.

Several Pennsylvania REALTORS® have recently discovered their names being used by Internet scam artists, particularly on the popular site Craigslist.com. The scammer often “adopts” a REALTOR’S® identity and uses it to trick unsuspecting consumers into sending deposits for apartment or home rentals.

The sophistication level of the scams continues to increase as these con artists lift property photos from the REALTORS®’ web sites, load them onto Craigslist and try to lure consumers into sending them deposits.

Nils Frederiksen, spokesperson for the PA Attorney General’s office, said, “The office has seen every form of financial scam more than double in the last two years. People are getting burned as both buyers and sellers.”

Fredericksen said if a REALTOR® is using the Internet to do business, he/she should make it a priority to find out what’s on the Internet about him/her. “These days you have to not only market your listings online but almost counter-market your information,” he said. “It behooves you to do a Google search on yourself to see if someone’s blogging about you or if someone is falsely using your name or information.”

Adding a watermark to photos, perhaps the REALTOR’s® web site, also makes it harder to use the photo illegally, Fredericksen advised. “You want to make it as difficult as possible for someone else to copy your information,” he said.

Fredericksen said if a REALTOR® suspects someone in his community is conducting this type of crime, they should contact their local law enforcement. Many times, however, this type of Internet crime involves people overseas and that makes it a federal crime.

If a REALTORS® discover their identity has been falsely used, they should file complaints with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).

The PA Attorney General’s office tracks such crimes and REALTORS® may file complaints online or call 800-441-2555.

If it appears that an item posted for sale on Craigslist may be part of a scam, e-mail the details to abuse@craigslist.org including URL (or 10-digit post ID number) in the message. Craigslist advises contacting the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online or at 877-382-4357.

An Agent who really knows these woods!

Pocono Pines Agent Albert Monaco is an avid fan of the outdoors; Hunting, fishing and walking the woods in search of what Mother Nature has to offer on the Pocono Plateau.

Albert Monaco’s “Hen of the Woods” wild mushroom

Al spotted the mushroom on September 30 while driving down a road in our area. Al will not disclose the location of this amazing find as this type of mushroom is known to reproduce annually in the same location for years.

Now, this particular type of mushroom is one of the best known of all edible mushrooms and it’s probably the one that offers the biggest harvest in many areas, for a single specimen of the “Hen of the Woods” can weigh 10 pounds or more. “Hen of the Woods” is most abundant in parts of the Northeast where there are many large oak trees, a single oak tree can yield as much as 100 pounds of this mushroom in one season.

Al cut the mushroom off of an Oak tree. He had to remove it in 5 parts. It is estimated to have weighed 65 pounds and was 3 feet in diameter. Approximately 30 pounds was root material and was discarded. Al soaked the mushrooms then par-boiled and canned it, reserving it for future consumption. This type of mushroom can also be easily frozen. ”Hen of the Woods” is considered a delicacy and the quality of the one Al found is remarkably close to fresh.

The name “Hen of the Woods” refers to it’ appearance, which resembles a hen with ruffled feathers. In Appalachian region it is called “Sheepshead” or “Ramshead” by many, these are similar visual metaphors. The Japanese name, Maitake, means ’ dancing mushroom’ - meaning a mushroom hunter lucky enough to find one is often inspired to dance gratefully at the discovery.

The Hen of the Woods is mostly a fall mushroom, but summer and even rarer, spring fruiting have been reported.

This species is typically associated with Oak trees so the best way to find it is to seek it during autumn around the base of large Oak trees, living or dead, and stumps. Other know hosts include Elm, Maple, Beech, Chestnut and Sycamore; lt has also been reported with larch , pines and other conifers. Especially under big Oak trees.

It is a very distinctive species with no dangerous “look-alikes” making it a very good choice for a novice mushroomer.

“Miller Time” is now “STRZELEC Time”

Article by: Dale Strzelec – an Agent in our Lake Harmony Office

With a last name like mine, STRZELEC, it is a shock to see it any where in print or advertising. Most of the time I only see it on monthly bills or at the “Bottom of the Eye Chart” in the Doctors office, and then it is not always spelled right.

You can imagine how shocked I was to learn that I am actually quite famous…in Poland!!!

Several years ago my kids started researching our family tree and one thing lead to another and we were all shocked to learn our roots can be traced back to a “Beer Brewery” that is still brewing Beer to this day.

Well no more “Miller Lite” for me, I had to have a STRZELEC BEER. The search was on. My kids and I tried everything to get STRZELEC BEER with no luck. Years of writing the Brewery in Poland, contacting importers and searching collector clubs……no STRZELEC BEER.

About a year ago I sold a home to a Polish couple who have been in America for about 15 years and asked them if they had ever heard of STRZELEC BEER. “Of Course” they said, “It was one of the biggest breweries in their country.” I told them that I had been trying to get some STRZELEC BEER for years with no luck and they just smiled and told me that they had not seen it since they left Poland.

What happened next was a shocker. I got a call from my Polish clients to come see their home and all of things that they have done to it. So I packed up the HEN…oops….Wife and off we went for a visit to their home. We walked in the front door and there on the table were 5 cans of STRZELEC BEER. We were floored. It seems that their sister was visiting from Poland and they thought enough of me to ask her to bring some STRZELEC BEER with her for their favorite Realtor.

Some things you just can not put a price on. My clients thoughtfulness was hard to match with the STRZELEC BEER, my kids are already making plans for their STRZELEC BEER and everyone in our family is excited. Only got 5 cans that is all their sister was allowed to bring through customs. My kids will have to fend for themselves.

Snowfall accumulation in!

Front Lawn today - Friday 10-16-09

Front Lawn today - Friday 10-16-09

Pocono Pines -  Well, we were gifted with about 5 inches of snow from Mother Nature yesterday/last night. It didn’t stick to the roads, but it did cover the trees, buildings and forest floor with a cottony thick blanket. The trees do look dangerously close to weighing down the power and phone lines but we seem to have gotten through our first snow just fine.  Now let’s all hope that the next storm coming through tonight and Saturday doesn’t take out the power.

Here is a link to the Pocono Record for more information on yesterday’s storm and the one on the way.

First Fall Snow

Pocono Pines – It’s October 15th 2009 and we have our first Snowfall! This is promised as the begining of a three day reminder, (snow showers on and off at our elevation),  that winter is even closer then we thought. Now, last year we had our first snowfall in late October, the  28th to be exact, and the accumilation was 12 inches in our neck of the woods.

The children are hoping for an early dismisal today or a delay tomorrow morning from school - a taste of winter fun that only kids can truly enjoy – Adults are getting out the snow shovels and making sure they have the plow service set up. All the time reminding themselves that they know better and should have done it before October 1st.

Though we look forward to winter fun, skiing, ice skating, sledding, snow tubing – we will miss the glorious colors of Fall and the not to distant past  Summer days on the lake, we do take pause to enjoy the first flakes that make everything white and clean and signal that it’s just a few months to Spring – a new beginning.

Editor’s Note: Just got an update – 9 -12 inches expected today/overnight – Will let you know what we get tomorrow! Check Back-

2010 Census to Begin: Advice on how to avoid identity theif during this important time

Submitted by: Lucille Richmond

Story at a Glance

If a Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, handheld device, Census Bureau canvas bag and confidentiality notice
Census workers do not need to go into your home
Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information
Do not give your Social Security Number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S Census
Census workers will not contact you by e-mail, so be on the lookout for e-mail scams impersonating the Census

THIS IS PRETTY BAS IC ADVICE; BUT, IN TODAY’S TIMES, I CAN SEE IT COULD LEAVE AN OPEN DOOR FOR PASSING OUT YOUR PRIVATE INFORMATION.

WARNING: 2010 Census Cautions from the Better Business Bureau

Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers

With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau  (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to  become a victim of fraud or identity theft.

The first phase of the  2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the  addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than  140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United  States and will gather information about every person living at each  add ress including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a  badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a  confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their  badge before answering their questions.  However, you should never  invite anyone you don’t know into your home.

Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify  address information.
Do not give your Social Security number, credit  card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it  for the U.S. > Census.

     The big question is -

     If a

REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR  ADDRESS.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information,  such as a salary range,
YOU DON’T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT  YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION.  The Census Bureau will not ask for Social  Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees  solicit donations.  Any one asking for that information is NOT with  the Census Bureau.

AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON  GATHERING THIS INFORMATION..  No Acorn worker should approach you  saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in  person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by  Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that  are
Supposedly from the US. Census Bureau.
& nbsp;
